Gabbard urges students to take a look at UH-West Oahu

Hawai'i State Senator Mike Gabbard, originally from Leloaloa, spoke at the 2nd Annual Samoa Ala Mai Conference at Windward Community College in Kaneohe, Hawai'i on September 11, 2010.

The Conference was sponsored by the University of Hawai’i at Manoa Office of Multicultural Student Services and focused on improving college attendance rates for Samoan youth.

Senator Gabbard encouraged the young people in attendance to take a hard look at the opportunities that will be available at the new University of Hawai'i - West Oahu campus which opens its doors in Kapolei (his district) in the fall 2012.

(BASED ON PRESS RELEASE) — Senator Mike Gabbard, Senator J. Kalani English, and Rep. Hermina Morita of Hawaii received the 2009 University of Hawaii Stars of Oceania award at the Waikiki Sheraton in Honolulu on April 9.

This award is given to traditional leaders from Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia who are elected public officials/community leaders and “advocate, practice, and lead in ways that demonstrate aloha, responsibility, and caring for the health, beauty and welfare of the Pacific Ocean and planet earth.”

Gabbard said, “I was humbled to receive this honor. A big mahalo to Dr. Tusi Avegalio and his staff at UH’s Pacific Business Center Program for the recognition and for doing such great work for Pacific Islanders.” ...Read Article

Educators conference opens in American Samoa

The Pacific Educational Conference in American Samoa officially opened Monday with Hawaii senator Mike Gabbard signaling the start of the four-day convention.

Cohosted this year by the American Samoa Department of Education, American Samoa Community College, and Pacific Resources for Education and Learning, the conference takes place from July 14 to 17.

One highlight will be the honoring Teachers of the Year from Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia, American Samoa, Palau, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, the Marshall Islands and Hawaii.

Andrew Golden, a science teacher at the Saipan Southern High School has been named Teacher of the Year for the CNM. Golden has been teaching for five years and currently handles physics and chemistry classes in grades 10-12. (Saipan Tribune)

 
Hawaii senator officially opens Pacific Educators Conference

American Samoa educator turned politician Mike Gabbard has officially opened the largest gathering of Pacific Educators in Pago Pago.

The Hawaii based senator told teachers attending the conference that they have the expertise to make learning more relevant, exciting and fulfilling for Pacific children.

And he says he’s confident the four day conference will be a huge success because of the calibre of delegates.

“What I find truly impressive is the incredible amount of expertise that’s assembled at this conference, as I flip through the listings of workshops, presentations and seminars being offered this week I was amazed at the breadth of subject areas that are being covered.16”
