Kapolei Land Transfer

A ceremony was held at Mayor Mufi Hannemann's office at Honolulu Hale on July 7, 2010 to mark the transfer of 34-acres of land from Kapolei Property Development to the City. In exchange for receiving the land, the City has committed to constructing the extension of Kapolei Parkway from DR Horton's Mehana subdivision to the Kapolei Court Complex and resurfacing Kamokila Boulevard.

Aloha Tofu Haiku Contest

Hawai’i's first-ever Aloha Tofu Haiku contest was celebrated on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Kapolei Public Library with storytelling by Nyla Fujii-Babb, haiku readings by area keiki, and tofu samples by Aloha Tofu and Senator Mike Gabbard.

Senator Gabbard was greeted by the “Plastic Bags Monster” at the State Capitol on February 10, 2010. The monster’s costume is made up of 400 plastic bags, the annual number used by the average American. Can you imagine 300 million times that many bags going into US landfills, or littering the land and sea every year? Senator Gabbard introduced SB2559 to encourage the use of biodegradable or reusable bags instead.

Senator Mike Gabbard hosted Zakaria Rami, an international exchange student from Morocco, as an intern for a day at the Capitol on January 22, 2010. Zak is a participant in the Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES) and is currently attending Kapolei High School for the year. Zak is a member of the school's wrestling team and lives in Kapolei with Mr. Doug Brown.

Senator Mike Gabbard and National Park Historian Daniel Martinez paid their respects at a Fort Barrette ceremony in Kapolei on December 6. 2009. The event honored the memory of Corporal Joseph Medlen, an Army Railway Engineer, who was mortally wounded during an attack by Japanese war planes on the morning of December 7, 1941. Both this event and a second ceremony at the former Marine Corps Air Station Ewa "Ewa Field" were organized by Ewa Beach resident John Bond.

Senator Mike Gabbard was fortunate to tour the new Kapolei Court Complex on November 18, 2009 with Chief Justice Ronald Moon, project manager Christina Uebelein, and other area legislators who helped to fund this large piece of the Kapolei puzzle. The $133 million project will open on March 29, 2010 and will have 12 non-jury courtrooms, 1 jury courtroom, and a juvenile facility that will house up to 66 young people.

Kapolei Ross Grand Opening

Ross at Kapolei Commons celebrated their grand opening on October 9, 2009 with a traditional Hawaiian blessing, presentation checks to the Hawai’i Foodbank and the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai’i, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and music by the Kapolei High School marching band. The store’s general manager, Marivic Higa, is flanked by Senator Mike Gabbard and Representative Sharon Har, who presented a joint certificate to the Ross employees on behalf of the Hawai’i State Legislature.

Hale Uhiwai Nalu provides 80 new studio apartments for veterans and was developed by Cloudbreak Hawai'i LLC.

Le Fetuao Samoan Language School and Mike Gabbard

Senator Mike Gabbard was given an autographed photo of the Le Fetuao Samoan Language School "ohana" at his Senate office on August 26, 2009. Le Fetuao is a church-based community outreach program designed to provide preschool to middle school aged children with language, literacy, and cultural vernacular education. The school is located at the First Samoan Methodist Church in Salt Lake. Their founder and director is Elisapeta Tu’upo-Alaimaleata. Senator Gabbard had the privilege of serving as the keynote speaker at the school's Open House Celebration in April of this year.

Senator Mike Gabbard joined Mayor Mufi Hannemann in celebrating the dedication of the Kamokila Boulevard Extension on March 3, 2009. Senator Gabbard helped to initiate this important road project back in 2003, when he represented District 1 on the City Council.

Senator Mike Gabbard recently visited with Mr. Michael Lurvey, the CEO of Carbon Diversion, at their facility in Campbell Industrial Park. Carbon Diversion uses a technology called flash carbonization to convert green waste into useable charcoal and has the goal of reducing our need for a landfill.
